Abstract

613,151. Forging-machines. EMANUEL, F., and EUMUCO (ENGLAND), Ltd. April 16, 1946, No. 11674. [Class 83 (iv)] A forging-machine having vice jaws subdivided from one another horizontally and closed together by a vertical movement, one jaw underlying the workpiece, is characterised in that the forging head is actuated by a connecting rod from a vertical shaft. The shaft 22, carrying the forging head 23, located between guide surfaces 24, 25, is reciprocated by a driven vertical shaft 16 operated by a single revolution clutch device. The work is inserted through an aperture 31 in the end wall of the machine and is gripped between shaped liners 32, 33, carried in vice jaws 27, 28, vice jaw 28 being movable in a vertical direction through toggle links 35, 36, each pivoted at one end to the vice jaw and at the other end to a sliding member 34, which is reciprocated by a connecting rod 37 operated from an eccentric 38 mounted on the crank-shaft 16, the setting of the eccentric 38 being such as to ensure a sufficient " dwell " in the movement of the vice jaw 28 to maintain the work clamped during the effective part of the forging stroke. In a modification, the toggle links are operated by a hydraulic piston. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the vice jaw 28 is operated by two pairs of toggle links 43, 44 and 46, 47, connected together by hinge pins 45 to a horizontally movable member 50, the other ends of links 43, 44 being connected to the vice jaw 28 and the other ends of the links 46, 47 being connected to the machine frame. The member 50 is operated by pistons 51, 52, movement in either direction being effected by connecting hydraulic pressure to either of pipes 55, 56. Return movement may be effected by hydraulic pressure permanently connected to the ends of the cylinders 53, 54 through pipes 57, 58 at a lower pressure than that admitted through the pipes 55, 56. For small forgings a single pair of liners may be adapted to receive two or more workpieces side by side.
