Abstract

613,023. Printing on cones. WAGNER, J. Aug. 2, 1945, No. 19905. [Class 100(ii)] A machine for printing on containers &c. shaped like a truncated cone is constructed so as to be capable of dealing with containers which vary in diameter and in inclination. In all cases the truncated cones are mounted on chucks 19 mounted to rotate about an axis a, b and the vertex F of the cone is arranged to be at the junction of the axis a, b and plane of the printing- surface 7. The chucks 19 are mounted on four arms 10, 11, 12, 13 of an intermittently rotatable device 9, and the chucks are adjustably connected to arcuate slots 20 having the vertex point F as centre, so as to adapt the printing operation to cones of different inclination. Also for dealing with cones of different diameters the device 9 and associated parts are adjustable longitudinally in the printing plane by arranging its base 14 to be capable of sliding along bars 15, the driving means for the device 9 being splined to its driving shaft 16. The cones can be fed and delivered automatically to the chucks when in the position of rest, and during this interval the printing-surface 7 receives its impression and moves to the position II so as to enable the cone to be printed by being rolled over the surface 7. As shown the printing-surface 7 is an offset surface which receives a three-colour impression from rollers 4, 5, 6, as is passes to the printing position. When the printing has been effected the surface 7 is returned to its starting position without coacting with the rollers 4, 5, 6. As shown in Fig. 6, the offset surface 7 is surrounded by a marginal portion 23 outside of the printing area, and rotation of the cones is started while engaging the marginal portions, and so the cone is in motion as it contacts the offset impression. Adjustment of the position of the chucks 19 may be obtained by using arms radially adjustable in length, or by employing a series of arms of sizes varying by constant amounts. The rotating device is pressed towards the printing surface.
