Abstract

612,941. Window frames. BIRMETALS, Ltd., and GOODWIN, H. June 11, 1946, No. 17364. [Class 20(iii)] In a metal window frame, the main members are of box-section and each comprise two extrusions of identical Z-section having unequal flanges 2, 3 with beaded edges 5, 4 respectively, the two Z-sections being assembled as shown with the open bead 4 of each clinched over the solid bead 5 of the other. Inserts or filling pieces may be secured, e.g. by welding, riveting or screwing, within the frame members, either before or after assembly, to interconnect them at the mitred corners, to reinforce the frame at attachment points, or to carry attachment fittings such as hinge lugs &c. or a retaining lever mounting bracket 9, Fig. 7, which as shown, is formed integrally with an insert 10, which is passed through a slot in the frame member and is riveted thereto. Mullions may be similarly secured by having their ends inserted in slots and riveted or burred over inside the frame members. The frame members may be of aluminium and form the movable and/or fixed frame of the window. Longitudinal projecting lips 6 may be provided, which, in the case of a movable frame, serve as a putty retainer on one side and prevent ingress of water between the movable and fixed frames on the other.
