Abstract
Clear, permanently refusible zinc-calcium resinates are made by a process comprising dissolving a rosin in a solvent, adding a carboxylic acid soluble in resin at the reaction temperature or a salt thereof capable of reacting with abietic acid to liberate the acid, adding 5-15 per cent by weight of zinc oxide (or equivalent hydroxide) based on the weight of the rosin, heating to complete the reaction between the rosin and the zinc compound, adding 1-55 per cent hydrated lime before or after adding the zinc compound, and heating to complete the reaction. The concentration of the rosin may be 50 per cent or more, the solvent may be distilled off from the reaction product, and the reaction temperature may be 100 DEG -150 DEG C. Heat-treated rosins prepared from gum or wood rosin according to Specification 351,583 may be used, or polymerised rosins obtained by use of zinc chloride, sulphuric acid, or boron trifluoride, or according to Specification 536,218. Solvents specified are mineral spirits, toluene, xylene, and terpenes. Catalysts specified are acetic, formic, lactic, tartaric, or citric acids or metal or ammonium salts thereof. Examples describe heating heat-treated rosin in mineral spirits with zinc oxide and lime in presence of acetic acid. Specification 612,806 also is referred to.
