Abstract

Resins suitable for use in paints and lacquers and for bonding rubber to metal are produced by esterifying with high molecular monocarboxylic acids or with polycarboxylic acids or their anhydrides the products obtained by reacting rubber with phenol or phenol derivatives. The acids may be linseed oil fatty acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid, stearic acid, colophony, or the acids present in tall oil. In examples (1), (2) and (3) a neutral resin like rubber transformation product with a hydroxyl number of 30 is esterified for several hours at 240 DEG C. with stearic acid, linseed oil fatty acid, and adipic acid respectively. (4) A similar product but with a hydroxyl number of 4 is esterified for 20 hours at 250 DEG C. with colophony. Specification 498,311 is referred to.
