Abstract

An aluminium-containing ester resin is obtained by reacting (1) a resinous or oily ester containing free alcoholic hydroxy groups and obtained by the partial esterification of one or more polyhydric alcohols with one or more higher saturated or unsaturated monocarboxylic acids or their esters and/or one or more polycarboxylic acids or their anhydrides and either (2) an aluminium alcoholate or (3) an aluminium-containing synthetic resin obtained by reacting an aluminium alcoholate with a compound exhibiting keto-enol tautomerism, as described in Specifications 718,283 and 718,284. Reaction is effected by mixing the ester and aluminium-containing compound and driving off the alcohol contained in the latter, preferably at an elevated temperature and/or under reduced pressure. Many polyhydric alcohols and polycarboxylic acids are referred to. The higher monocarboxylic acids used are those containing at least 16 carbon atoms, especially resinic acids and fatty acids. The aluminium alcohlaates used may be stabilized by using them in solution with compounds exhibiting keto-enol isomerism. In examples there are reacted (1) Linseed oil monoglyceride and an aluminium-containing resin obtained by heating aluminium butylate with acetoacetic ester. (2) A glycerine ester of colophony and aluminium butylate. (3) A pentaerythritol ester of colophony and the aluminium-containing resin used in example (1). (4) A linseed-oil modified glycerine-phthalate resin and either (a) an aluminium containing resin obtained by heating aluminium butylate and acetoacetic ester or (b) a stabilized aluminium alcoholate. (5) A castor oil modified glycerine-adipate resin and a stabilized aluminium butylate. (6) A soya-bean oil modified glycerine phthalate resin and the aluminium-containing synthetic resin used in example (1). (7) A linseed oil modified glycerine-phthalate resin and an aluminium-containing synthetic resin obtained by reacting aluminium triethyleneglycol with acetoacetic ester. The mixture of the alkyd and aluminium-containing synthetic resin may be made at room temperature and used as a stoving lacquer, reaction taking place during the stoving. (8) A coconut oil modified glycerine-phthalate resin and the aluminium-containing resin used in example (1).
