Abstract

Fumarated rosin size is prepared by reacting rosin with formaldehyde to introduce methylol groups into the rosin, heating the rosin-formaldehyde product at a temperature and for a time sufficient to dehydrate the methylol groups and then either (a) reacting this product with fumaric acid at a temperature below the adduct isomerization temperature and saponifying the adduct to form the rosin size or (b) mixing this product with a rosin-fumaric acid reaction product which has been formed by heating rosin with fumaric acid below the adduct isomerization temperature and saponifying the mixture so formed. Alternatively, prior to step (b) the two portions may be saponified and then mixed. The reaction of the rosin with formaldehyde is preferably carried out at a temperature below 230 DEG C., the dehydration step is preferably carried out at a temperature of 250 DEG to 300 DEG C. and the reaction of the rosin with fumaric acid is preferably carried out at a temperature of less than 220 DEG C., the latter temperature being the temperature at which the rosin-fumaric acid adduct isomerizes. Saponification is preferably by reaction with an aqueous alkali metal alkali. Suitable rosins are gum rosin and tall oil rosin.
