Abstract
Rosin sizes for improving the resistance of paper to penetration by aqueous liquids, especially lactic acid solutions, are made by saponifying rosin which has been reacted with sufficient formaldehyde, e.g. 1/10 to 1/3 molar equivalents, to inhibit crystallization. The reaction may be at 190-230 DEG C. Additionally, 1/2 -\ba1/4 mol of an alpha, beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acid of not more than 6 carbon atoms, e.g. maleic anhydride, per mol of rosin may be employed. The reaction formaldehyde may be paraformaldehyde. The rosins employed according to examples are tall oil rosin from which fatty acids have been removed, gum rosin and dark wood rosin.
