Description

Patented Oct. 11, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROBERT C. MURRAY, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOB TO ECONOMICS LABORATORY, INC., ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE PROCESS FOR MAKING SODIUM BESINATE No Drawing. Application filed August 8, 1928. Serial No. 888,428.
The present invention relates to a process for making dry sodium resinate.
An object of the present invention is to simplify and improve a process for making dry sodium resinate.
In order to attain this object, a quantity of rosin is heated until completely melted and is then saponified by slowly adding a predetermined amount of alkali to completely neutralize the rosin. The amount of alkali added is approximately fifty per cent of the amount of rosin used. During the addition of the alkali the mass is stirred so as to prevent the formation of solid masses which might interfere with the complete saponification of the mass. During this mixing process the mass is held at or above one hundred dlegrees centigrade until the reaction is comp ete.
The completion of the reaction is indicated by the mass becoming hard, dry, and brittle.
The alkalis used in carrying out this process may be potash, dye, or any other suitable alkali.
A modification of this process of producing dry sodium resinate comprises the melting of a quantity of rosin and the adding of an amount of alkali less than that necessary to completely neutralize the rosin. This al- 80 kali is then supplemented by the addition of dry sodium phosphate crystals in excess of the amount necessary to complete the reaction. This will produce dry sodium resinate which will contain tri-sodium phosphate crystals. This dry sodium resinate is used commercially as an ingredient in soaps and cleaning mixtures for its detergent properties.
Heretofore it has been possible to manufacture dry sodium resinate, but, previous sodium resinates have had a tendency to cake when in use, which tendenc does not exist in the dry sodium resinate pr uced by the present process.
I claim:
The method of producing a dry detergent containing sodium resinate which comprises melting a quantity of rosin, of addin to said melted rosin an amount of caustic al ali less than that necessary to completely neutralize 50 the rosin, of thereafter addmg to the mixture afiix my signature.
