[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A machine tool is characterised in that the relative movement between a tool and a work-piece to be machined is obtained, on the one hand, by the usual feed mechanism of the machine and, on the other hand, by a reduced finishing feed, which is independent of the normal feed mechanism and is obtained by the resilient deformation in the direction of its feed movement, of a part of the machine partaking of the movement of the member (tool or work-piece) to be moved, by the action of an adjustable constraint applied to the said part. As applied to a grinding machine with a main frame 1, Fig. 1, carrying a work-holder 7 and a grinding wheel carriage 2, with wheel 3, given a normal feed by a screwed rod 4, the finish-feed stressing means comprises a lever 8 pivoted, at its upper end to a horizontal rod 10 connected to the carriage 2, and at its lower end to the main frame 1, and acted on by a rod 12 screwed by a hand-wheel 11 against the action of a stressing spring 14, into a knuckle 13 in the said lever 8. The deformation produced by a definite amount of stressing is measured either by apparatus 15 or by reading the experimentally graduated hand-wheel 11 or by a pneumatic measuring apparatus. In operation the grinding wheel 3 is first given a normal feed by means of the rod 4, the hand-wheel 11 is then turned a predetermined amount to compress the spring 14 and apply a stress to the carriage 2 which stress will deform the carriage towards the work, thus giving the required finishing feed. As applied to a centreless grinder with a grinding wheel 19, Fig. 2, and driving wheel 20, the finish feed stressing means comprises a threaded rod 25, screwed into a socket 27 adjustably fixed in a main frame 18, and extending through a driving wheel carriage 21 between which and a shoulder on the rod on one side, and a handwheel 26 on the other side, two springs 29, 30 are provided so that stress can be imposed in either direction.
