Abstract

610,567. Automatically adjustable couplings. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 19, 1946, No. 8518. Convention date, March 27, 1945. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In an ignition timing coupling (see Group XXVII) a driving member 12 and a driven member 13, Fig. 3, are coupled together, through intermediate members 14, 15 in a manner which permits of relative angular displacement by centrifugal means consisting of six arcuate plates arranged in pairs 16, 17, 18, Fig. 1, one plate of each pair being on either side of the members to which they are connected. The pairs of arcuate plates 16, 17, 18 are pivoted at one end to their respective members 12, 14, 13, whilst between the other ends are positioned rollers that co-operate with slots 37, 49, 61 respectively. Each arcuate plate, which has a weight 56 riveted opposite its pivoted end, is spring connected to an inner point of the arm of the member to which it is pivoted. Anticlockwise rotation at or below the speed at which the coupling occupies the position shown in Fig. 1 provides for spark advance, whilst at a predetermined higher speed the roller end of the pair of arcuate plates 18 moves to the end of slot 61 since spring 64 is lighter than two other springs 41, 52, which control the pairs of arcuate plates 16, 17 respectively, causing the intermediate members 14, 15 and driving member 12 to experience an anti-clockwise movement, thereby retarding the ignition. At a higher speed, the pair of arcuate plates 16 pivot outwardly since the spring 41 is lighter than spring 52 and as a result intermediate members 14, 15 and driven member 13 move anti-clockwise until an adjustable stop 69 on the latter contacts the driven member 12, in which position the ignition is fully advanced. At a still higher speed, the pair of arcuate plates 17 become operative, thereby causing driving member 12 and intermediate member 14 to move anti-clockwise and so retard the ignition.
