Abstract

591,528. Automatically-adjustable couplings. CLEVELAND, F. J. (Bendix Aviation Corporation). May 11, 1945, No. 11899. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In an automatically-adjustable coupling timing ignition in a magneto drive, the driving and driven members are connected by means which, with increase of speed, effect relative circumferential movement between the members in different directions over different speed ranges, whereby the spark is advanced with increase of speed over one speed range and retarded with speed increase over another, and preferably higher, speed range. As shown, a driving sleeve 19, carrying an arm 12 and freely journalled on a magneto rotor shaft 10 carrying an arm 13, drives the shaft 10 through centrifugal links 23, 16 pivoted on the arms 12, 13 respectively, and each having a pin and slot connection 27, 28 and 39, 41 respectively with a freely journalled intermediate member 14. Centrifugal force acting on the weighted end 24 of the link 23 moves the pin 27 inward against a pair of springs 29 and increases the angle between the arm 12 and the member i4; whilst centrifugal force acting on the link 16 moves the pin 39 outward against a pair of springs 43 to decrease the angle between the member 14 and the arm 13. The characteristics of the centrifugal linkages are so chosen that the link 23 operates over one speed range and the link 16 over a higher and distinct speed range, so that the magneto timing is first advanced and then retarded as the speed is progressively increased. By suitable choice of the slot contours and of the design and connection points of the springs, the timing may be made to vary with the speed in any manner. Additional springs coming into action at different speeds may be provided. Another construction described and shown comprises the subject-matter of Specification 591,529, which is referred to.
