Abstract
Labile vinyldiacetonalkamine is prepared by hydrogenating vinyldiacetonamine in the presence of a nickel catalyst, preferably with agitation in a solvent, under hydrogen pressures of 1,500-3,000 lbs./sq. in. and at temperatures in excess of 180 DEG C. Examples are given in which the solvent is methanol and the catalyst Raney nickel or nickel pellet. The product may be treated with formaldehyde to form N-methyl-vinyldiacetonalkamine which on treatment with mandelic acid and hydrogen chloride yields the mydriatic eucatropine hydrochloride.
