Abstract

609,773. Ironing - boards. CAMPBELL ENGINEERING CO.. Ltd.. and LUDLOW. J. A. March 21, 1946, Nos. 8828 and 20088. [Class 138(ii)] [Also in Group XIV] An ironing-board 6 having a leg structure 11, 13 adapted to be folded so as to lie against the underside of the board has a sleeve board 22 similarly provided with a foldable leg structure 27, 39 which is hinged to fixed bearings on the underside of the ironing board so that the sleeve board can be swung from its operative position on the surface of the ironing board to a position in which it either hangs beneath the ironing board or lies between or in a plane closely adjacent, the leg structure of that board. The leg structure of the ironing-board consists of two U- shaped frames 11, 13 which are pivoted together at 19 so that one frame can fold within the other. The upper ends of the frame 11 are hingedly mounted in brackets 33, Fig. 2, on the underside of the board, and the upper ends of the frame 13 are joined to form a continuous bar 15 which is engaged by two spaced parallel straps 16 fixed to the underside of the board; the straps 16 have a downward slope to assist the folding of the legs, and abutments 17, 18 at opposite ends of the straps limit the opening and closing movement. The leg structure of the sleeve board also comprises two frames 27, 39 which are pivoted together at 44. The frame 27 is of U-shape with the limbs thereof widened and pivoted at their ends 30 to brackets 32 downwardly projecting from the ironing- board; the closed end portion 26 of this frame is hinged in V-shaped slots of two brackets 35, Fig. 4, on the underside of the sleeve board. The second frame 39 is of elongated rectangular form, one end portion of which is pivotally mounted in a bearing 41 on the underside of the sleeve board. In the position of use, the frames 27, 39 are extended, the foot portion 42 of the frame 39 rests upon the ironing-board, and the end portion 26 of the frame 27 engages in vertical portions of the grooves in the brackets 35. From this position, the sleeve board may be swung over the rear of the ironing-board so that it hangs downwardly beneath this board. During this swinging movement, the rear end of the sleeve board abuts the rear end of the ironing-board and thereby moves the bar 26 up inclined portions of the grooves in the brackets 35 and folds the leg structure of the sleeve board; the bar 26 is held in this position by a spring clip 38 on the underside of the sleeve board. The sleeve board can then be swung forwardly and engaged by clips 21 carried by the frame 11 of the ironing-board so as to hold the parts folded against this frame or between the legs thereof. From this position, the frames 11, 13 may be folded together, and the ironing board swung on to the folded leg structure. The ironing-board is formed from a sheet-metal base 6 which is provided with a peripheral flange 7 and supports on its upper surface a padding having a covering 10 of coarse linen. The sleeve board is similarly constructed of a flanged base 22, padding, and covering 25. If desired, the covering for each board may have its front portion formed as a bag, the upper thickness of which is gripped at its rear end by the clamping frame 52 of an asbestos iron-supporting sheet 8 (in the case of the ironing-board) or a metal angle strip 53 (in the case of the sleeve board). The first Provisional Specification also describes the following modifications :-(1) The upper ends of the U-shaped frame 13 are shaped to engage detachably with clips on the underside of the ironing-board when the latter is in operative position. (2) The lower ends of the frame 27 of the sleeve board are provided with inturned ends for engaging horizontal slots in the peripheral flanges of the ironing-board, and rollers mav be mounted on these inturned ends. (3) The elongated frame 39 may be pivoted to a double-lugged bearing on the underside of the sleeve board by means of a detachable pin. In order to fold the sleeve board, the pin is withdrawn, the leg structure collapsed against the sleeve board, and the pin is then reinserted so that its ends engage the longer sides of the frame and hold it flat against the board.
