Abstract
609,456. Releasing bodies from aircraft. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd. April 15, 1946, No. 8046. [Class 9 (ii)] To prevent a petrol tank or like container fouling the structure of an aircraft on release, the clamping device for the container embodies a piston and cylinder between which explosion gases from a cartridge act to release the clamping device and positively to expel the container away from the aircraft. In the form shown, the container to be jettisoned has mounted in it wooden blocks 9 which are held to the clamping device by the tie bolt 10, this bolt being joined by a universal coupling to the bottom of the cylinder 22, which is supported on an assembly depending from the wing by claw members 11 held together by the strips 24. On exploding a cartridge 38 in a container 37, mounted on the side of the cylinder by drawing a cam-like trigger and sear member 42 under the spring-loaded firing pin 39, the explosion gases act between the cylinder 22 and piston 28 to force the piston first to disengage the claw members by engaging its conical head 27 with abutments in the claw members and shearing the bolts of the tie strips 24 and then to engage in the cup-shaped member 36 to expel the tank, the expelling force being applied even as the tank is swept back by the aircraft slipstream, due to the universal coupling above the tie bolt.
