Abstract
608,949. Lenses for radio waves. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. April 23, 1945, No. 10213. Convention date, April 22, 1944. [Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vii)] A lens for use with U.H.F. electromagnetic waves is composed of wave-refracting material, the incident surface of which is treated or formed to reduce reflection. A plano-convex lens may be shaped as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which 1 is a thin body of wave-refracting material having incident and emergent surfaces 3, 5. Both surfaces are coated to a depth corresponding to #/4 (or to an odd number of quarterwave lengths) with a material having a dielectric constant which approximates the square root of that of the wave-refracting material. Such a lens may be inserted between two conductive sheets 13, 15, Fig. 4, constituting a form of wave-guide, two ends of the sheets being curved to form a linear aperture 17. A double convex lens may be formed with similar coatings on each face, Fig. 6 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the incident surface, instead of being coated or pitted, is inclined or tapered in the direction of the incident energy.
