Abstract

608,937. Ball joints. WOODHEAD & SONS, Ltd., J., ONIONS, J. W., and BROOK, H. July 15, 1944, No. 13564. [Class 65 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] In a mounting for the end of a laminated spring of the kind in which the spring end is ball-mounted in a support, the ball is fixed to the spring end and is permitted to roll and/or slide in a slideway provided in a housing on the support. In the construction shownin Figs. 3 and 4, a ball member 4 has an annular recess 4a and cut-away lower sides 4b by which it is respectively located in slots in the back plate 2 and other plates 3. One end of the spring, Fig. 4, is free to move in a longitudinal direction by virtue of a bearing member 9 which has a spherical recess 9a for the member 4 and is slidable in a housing 5a. In a third construction, Fig. 10, a ball member 4<1> having a stem 11 bolted to the spring plates, bears in a cylindrical housing 5<1> closed by end plates 16 which may or may not carry locating bolts 15 having ends which are spherically faced to engage the ball. Alternatively, the ends may be provided with replaceable wear-plates which engage the ball. Both bolts may be adjusted to engage the ball or their ends may be spaced to permit longitudinal movement. All bearing surfaces may be hardened by nitriding &c.
