Abstract
608,667. Photographic emulsions. ELLIOTT & SONS, Ltd., BARRETT, E. G. V., HOWE, D. J. T., and PARNELL, P. G. Dec. 3, 1945, No. 32616. [Class 98 (ii)] A small quantity of a water-insoluble gold compound in the form of a colloidal suspension is introduced to a gelatino-silver halide emulsion before or during final digestion to increase the sensitivity to light. The quantity is not intended to exceed the equivalent of 0.007 grams of metallic gold per litre of emulsion, and the silver halide concerned is principally silver bromide. A precipitating agent such as ammonia, pyridine, piperidine, triethanolamine, triethylamine, silver nitrate, thallous nitrate or lead acetate may be added to a gelatine sol containing sodium chloroaurate or potassium bromoaurate, or should the gold salt employed be a complex, cyanide, or thiocyanate, the precipitating agent may be an ammonium base or a salt of a metal which forms an insoluble cyanide or thiocyanate, and the resulting colloidal suspension of gold compound is set, shredded, washed to remove soluble salts, remelted and is then ready for addition to the emulsion. The emulsions should be made from normal gelatines containing sulphur compounds, otherwise, sulphur compounds' as described in Specification 539,355 should be added; and hardening agents, preservatives, stabilisers or optical sensitisers may be included. Six examples enumerate the improvement in speed, as compared with normal emulsions, which results. Specification 570,393 also is referred to.
