Abstract

<PICT:0608612/III/1> Ammonium nitrate is prepared from ammoniacal liquors obtained in coke manufacture by distilling the liquors, introducing the ammoniacal vapours so obtained below the level of the liquid in a saturator containing a diluted solution of ammonium nitrate and nitric acid maintained at a temperature higher than the condensation temperature of the water vapour entrained with the ammoniacal vapours, and introducing nitric acid into the solution to neutralize the ammonia entirely in the liquid phase, the water vapour and any entrained inert gas being utilized to circulate and intermingle the reactants. Preferably, the nitric acid is maintained in slight excess. As shown, ammoniacal vapours are introduced by a pipe 8 and nitric acid by a pipe 9 into saturator 1, the insulation of the liquor in the saturator being effected by the action of water vapour &c. in an ejector system comprising a constriction 4 and a shaped outlet 3 on a vertical tube 7, and an upwardly directed multiple-orificed sprayer 6 on the pipe 8. Ammonium nitrate of the required concentration is removed through a pipe 10 either continuously or intermittently. If desired, the saturator may be provided with a plurality of such ejector systems. Specification 503,256 is referred to.
