[Class 12 (i)] A ball or roller bearing has races 1, 2 of synthetic plastic material with side flanges 5, 4 to retain the balls or rollers which latter are assembled by being forced through an aperture of less radial extent than the ball or roller diameter and provided by a cut-away portion A, B of approximately semicircular form in one side flange of each race being brought into register. The cut-away portions are actually of a radius greater than the balls or rollers 3, but are drawn from a centre lying beyond the travel path of the ball or roller centres so to give a less radial extent. To allow forcing out of the balls or rollers, the opposite side of the bearing may have like cut-away portions in the flanges. The synthetic plastic material may be any one of those specified in Specification 564,273. The Provisional Specification also describes an arrangement in which the rims of the side flanges have inwardly extending lips past which the rollers are forcibly inserted radially; the lips may have a radial slot of a depth extending part way in the axial direction to facilitate such insertion; or the flanges may increase in thickness axially inwards at their rim portions. Such bearings may have the rollers running direct on the housing, the outer race being eliminated. The race may be formed by two flanged hub portions, the latter fitting together in a telescopic manner and being secured by adhesive or by being forced on to a shaft collar.
