Abstract
607,880. Slicing machines. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, H. (U.S. Slicing Machine Co., (in part)). Oct. 17, 1945, No. 27148. [Class 28(ii)] The space between the lower edge of the disc knife 20 and the framework 32 of a slicing machine is bridged by an extension 34, Fig. 4, of the knife mask plate 30 so as to obstruct entry of the operator's fingers into this space down which scraps usually fall into the usual scrap space A, this extension acting as a further guard for the knife. The extension 34 which may be curved is provided with holes to allow the scraps to fall through to A. The extension 34 may be alternatived by a fitting on part of the machine base. A withdrawable scrap pan may be provided in the space A which is masked at both ends by other extensions, one extension 37, Figs. 1 and 2 being a part of the pivoted slice deflector 29, the other extension 35, Fig. 5 being an extension of the flange 36 of the knife mask 30. The mask 30 is provided with slots and catches 41 and 42 to hold it in position but allowing easy removal. The flange 36 prevents scraps falling on the machine base 21, Fig. 2, or on the low platform 33 which is combined with the slice receiver 28; the slice receiver is integral with the base 21. In a modification, Fig. 7, the masking plate 30 with its knife guarding flange 36 is removably locked by a knob D. Cut aways B and C are provided, the cut away B exposing the knife edge at the cutting position and C for grinding, either of which is brought into position by releasing the knobs 58, 59 and turning the plate around as required. To wipe the knife, the mask 30 is rocked forward under the guidance of a hinge 52 away from the knife. The mask 30 can then be lifted out of the retaining lugs 56, 57 of the support plate 50. The support plate itself can be removed by pulling out its hinge pin which is bent at its end 52A for this purpose. The plate 50 is shaped at its bottom, to contain a withdrawable scrap receiving pan (60, Fig. 8, not shown), the scraps falling through a hole cut in the plate 20. The plate 50 serves as a guide plate above the pan. It has a flange 51 to guard the corresponding part of the edge of the knife. In Fig. 9, a vertical dished knife is used having a mask plate 75 locked to a stationary knife guard 80, but releasable by unlocking. It may then be rocked about a hinge 83 and removed by lifting its pins out of the slots 86, 87. A scrap pan 60 with closed end and pull finger grip is provided. In another modification, Fig. 11, a handle 88 manipulates the mask 75. A type of rising butt hinge 92 with a spring urges the mask horizontally clear of the knife. The plate can then be pivoted bodily about 92 away from the knife into the dotted position 75 by means of the handle 88. This mask 75 has a similar attached guard plate 98 with holes to allow scraps to fall through. Specification 594,404 is referred to.
