4 Claims. (Cl. 128-346) This invention relates to a surgical device. More particularly the invention concerns a circumcision clamp.
While clamps for use in circumcision are known in the art, such clamps include a number of components and their use entails awkward manipulation upon the part of the operator, particularly in the case of one who performs such an operation at infrequent intervals.
Accordingly, an object of this invention is to provide an improved circumcision clamp whish is a one piece construction, is made up of simple elements, and is readily manipulated by the operator.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described, which may be withdrawn after the operation without opening the freshly cut edge of the prepuce.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved circumcision clamp which comprises a pair of interpivoted arms with a ring portion on one arm and a bell shaped projection on the other arm cooperative to support and position the prepuce relative to the preputial cavity in an improved manner and further adapted to prevent the prepuce from sliding back during the operation.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists of the elements of construction and arrangement of parts as will be exemplified in the embodiment hereinafter described, the scope of invention being indicated in the claims following.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a surgical clamp embodying the invention with the arms thereof in open position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial view of the operative parts thereof in engagement, with parts in section;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the clamp portion shown in Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, designates a circumcision clamp embodying the invention. The same comprises a pair of arms 11, 12 having portions intermediate the ends thereof interpivoted as at 13. The arms 11, 12 are formed at their rear ends with handle portions 14, 15 respectively and cooperative locking means 16, 17 respectively, located adjacent said handle portions. The rear portions of arms 11, 12 may be linear as at 18, 19 while the fore portions of said arms may be curved as at 20, 21.
Forearm portion 20 terminates in a ring shaped portion 22 of circular cross section which is disposed in a plane at right angles to the plane of pivoted movement of arms 11, 12. A bell shaped projection, generally indicated at 23 is secured to the terminal end of forearm portion 21, as by a screw 24.
The projection 23 comprises a cylindrical upper portion 25 having an outwardly flared, annular flange 26 at the lower end thereof and joined to portion 25 by an annular concave portion 27. Extending downwardly from flange 26 is a projecting portion 28 of generally frusto-conical shape with a convex surface, the diameter of the larger end of portion 28 being substantially equal to the diameter of flange 26. The bottom offrustoconical portion 28 is formed with a recess 29 which is of conical shape. A passage extends from recess 29, as it 30 and opens at its upper end on the annular portion The projection 23 is concentrically related to ring 22, when handles 14, 15 are brought together, with the upper portion of frustoconical portion 28 seating itself on the "ice inner edge of ring 22 when arms 11, 12 are brought as close together as locking means 16, 17 permit.
In using the device 10, the operator draws the prepuce down over the glans and the ring 22 is brought into .encircling engagement with prepuce at the base thereof. The handles 11, 12 are then manipulated to move projection 23 into the preputial cavity, the glans being received in recess 29 thereof and the prepuce is arranged about the surface of portions 25, 26, 28. The arms 11, 12 are then locked through means 16, 17, thus providing compression of the prepuce along a limited circumferential line defined by opposed portions of the convex surface of portion 28 and the inner surface of ring 22.
The prepuce is then trimmed by means of a knife guided by the ring shaped portion 22 and pressed against the frustoconical portion 28 of the projection 23. The clamp is left in place for approximately five minutes to allow adequate agglutination between the skin and mucous membranes to take place at the compressed circumferential portions thereof. The clamp is then released. It has been found that the portions 25, 27 of projection 23 are particularly effective in preventing the prepuce from sliding back and interfering with the operation.
it will be apparent that the improved clamp embodying the instant invention can be readily manipulated with a single hand and may be efliciently used by one who performs such operations at infrequent intervals. The withdrawal of the clamp after completion of the operation, does not open up a freshly cut edge of the prepuce and there is little likelihood of bleeding. The passage 30 provides means for draining off urine which may be emitted during the operation.
it will thus be seen that there is provided a surgical device in which the several objects of the invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above described invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment shown and described, it is understood that all matter herein set forth or shown is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent:
1. A surgical device comprising a pair of arms interpivoted intermediate the ends thereof, each of said arms including cooperating handle means at one end thereof, one of said arms terminating in a ring shaped portion disposed at right angles to the plane in which said arms have pivotal movement, the other of said arms terminating in a projection extending at right angles to said arm, said projection including a generally lower frusto-conical portion with a convex surface, said ring shaped portion having a circular cross section.
2. A surgical device as in claim 1, wherein said frustoconical portion is formed with a conical recess at the lower end thereof.
3. A surgical device as in claim 2 wherein said projection is formed with a passage extending upwardly from said recess and opening on a surface portion of said cylindrical portion.
4. A surgical device comprising a pair of interpivoted arms, each of said arms including handle means at one end thereof, one of said arms terminating at the other end thereof in a ring, the other of said arms including a projection adapted to move towards and away from said ring upon pivoted movement of said arms, said projection comprising a convex surface and said ring having a curved inner surface engageable with the convex surface of said projection upon movement of said projection toward said ring.
