[Class 80 (iv)] In a slicing-machine of the kind, for example, in which a loaf &c. is fed step-by-step from a loading tray 11 past a knife located in a housing 12 to a slice receiver, a guard is provided in association with the loading tray, and/or with the slice receiver, which is displaceable between a closed position, in which the loaf is exposed to the knife, and an open position, in which the guard exposes the loaf but masks the knife. As shown in Fig. 1, the guard comprises an open-ended box 16 having a separate front wall 15 which is provided with a top flange 15a pivotally attached at 18 to the top 14 of the box and with a rolled edge 22 to serve as a finger grip, the box itself being clipped to the usual driving shaft casing tube 24 and also secured to the loading tray. Preferably, the front wall is curved at 28 so that, when open, it maintains close relationship with a flange 29 around the aperture 13 of the knife housing. If desired, the guard may be provided with means such as a rod for engagement with a manually turnable fly-wheel or, in an electrically driven machine, with a switch, for preventing opening of the guard except when the machine is stopped and for locking the machine against operation when the guard is open. Where guards are fitted on each side of the knife, the two guards may be interconnected by a linkage so that they are opened and closed simultaneously.
