Abstract

607,776. Valve closure members. WEATHER HEAD CO. May 22, 1945, No. 12758. Convention date, May 22, 1944. [Class 135] The valve head 6 of a screw-down valve is provided with a sealing ring 12 of natural or synthetic rubber disposed between splitmetal rings 13, 14, the flanges 13a, 14a of which restrict axial deformation of the ring, and the conical surfaces 13b, 14b of which coact with a seat 4. The inner edge of the flange 13a is spaced from the cylindrical surface 16 of the valve head, whilst the inner edge of the flange 14a is in contact with said surface. On light closure of the valve, the surface 14b of the ring 14 contacts with the seat 4, whilst the flange 14a forms an abutment for the ring 12 which, on further closure of the valve, is radially deformed to make sealing contact with the seat.
