Abstract

A resinous composition particularly for use in cementing thermionic valve globes to their bases comprises 5 to 25 per cent by weight of a two-stage phenolic-aldehyde resin from which substantially all the volatile materials have been removed, magnesia and/or other alkaline earth oxides in an amount comprising at least 5 per cent by weight of the resin, a substantially anhydrous aldehyde or aldehyde supplying agent in an amount at least sufficient for the heat convertibility of the two-stage resin, and one or more inert fillers. The two-stage resin is prepared by boiling formalin with excess phenol and an oxalic acid catalyst for six hours, followed by vacuum distillation of the product. The resin is broken up and reheated for 3 1/2 to 4 hours at normal pressures at 150 DEG C. A cement comprising 11.5 parts of the resin, 79 parts marble dust, 6.8 parts colophony, 0.74 parts hexamine and 1.15 parts magnesia is applied in the form of a paste formed by the addition of industrial methylated spirits.
