Abstract
A cement for bonding glass to articles of other materials and particularly for attaching the base of an electric lamp to the glass envelope thereof, consists of (1) a thermosetting phenolaldehyde resin; (2) rosin and/or dry shellac, (1) and (2) together constituting at least 13 per cent by weight of the composition; (3) a sufficient amount of solvent, e.g. denatured alcohol, to completely dissolve (2); (4) a small amount, preferably 3 to 6 per cent by weight of the composition, of sugar; and the remainder consisting of (5) a mineral filler, e.g. marble flour, barytes and asbestos. The filler content usually amounts to 75 to 82 per cent (by weight of the composition), and the thermosetting resin is preferably used in amount of 6 to 7 percent to 7-8 per cent of the natural resin content which preferably consists of 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 per cent of rosin and 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 per cent of shellac. A curing indicator, such as malachite green, may be added. Synthetic resins specified are phenolformaldehyde and phenol-furfural-formaldehyde to which dibutyl phthalate, hexamethylenetetramine, benzoyl peroxide and wood flour have been added. Two examples are given.
