Abstract

Sterols are separated from sterol containing materials, e.g cholesterol from wool grease forming a complex with a suitable salt and separating it from the mixture. Suitable salts are organic or inorganic salts of the following metals: sodium, potassium, the alkaline earth metals, aluminium, manganese, iron, zinc, cadmium, cobalt, tin, chromium and nickel, the salt being capable of forming an addition compound with lower aliphatic alcohols or with mono- or polyhydroxy-phenols. As the acid radical, there may be halides, nitrates, sulphates, acetates, succinates, benzoates, salicylates and sulphonates. Good results are obtained using zinc or manganous chlorides. In certain cases it is desirable that water should be added in addition to the water of crystallization. After separation, the decomposition product may be decomposed by the addition of water or by short path, high vacuum distillation. Detailed examples are given.
