Abstract

607,076. Pug-mills. WILLIS, C. L. Jan. 25, 1946, No. 2449. [Class 86] A machine for de-airing plastic materials comprises a horizontal pug-mill which feeds the material into a de-airing chamber, the material being extruded by a vertical delivery pug-mill, and the horizontal pug-mill is swivellably mounted about a vertical axis on a supporting pedestal and is detachably coupled to its driving means and to the barrel of the de-airing chamber. The worm shaft 16 of a horizontal pug-mill 20, which feeds material into a de-airing chamber 32, is driven by gear wheels 14, 15 from a shaft 10 connected by bevel gearing 21, 22 to a vertical shaft 25 carrying a worm 26 in a delivery pug-mill 33. The shaft 10 is driven by a belt or chain or other gearing from a motor. The pug-mill 20 has a feed opening 30 which is closed by means of a spring or weight loading. To facilitate inspection and clearing of the feed pug 20 the drive at the end of the feed pug worm consists of flanges bolted together with a spacing block 35 between them, which can be removed when the coupling is released. A spacing ring between the delivery end of the feed pug barrel and the chamber 32 can also be removed, and the whole feed pug-mill unit can be swivelled about a pedestal bearing 34. Both the feed and delivery worms may be mounted in the manner described in Specification 607,077. The bottom flange 38 of the delivery pug may be provided with two positions of attachment, 90 degrees apart, for each of two supporting columns 39, so that these columns can be set in position suitable to the direction in which it is desired to take away the treated materials from the machine.
