Abstract

Dry guanidine salts are obtained in finely-divided form from solutions or suspensions in volatile solvents containing liquid ammonia, by heating the solution or suspension under pressure and then spraying it into a chamber where the pressure is such that flash evaporation takes place. The temperature of the liquid when sprayed should be sufficiently high (120 DEG to 200 DEG C.) to permit substantially complete evaporation of ammonia. A solution of guanidine nitrate in liquid ammonia is prepared in autoclave 4 and run, whilst still hot, through jacketed pressure reducing valve 23 to nozzle 7 where it is sprayed into chamber 8. The bulk of the ammonia immediately flashes into vapour and the guanidine nitrate settles as a finely-divided solid on the bottom 9 which is heated by steam jacket 16 to a temperature sufficiently high to assist the removal of unvaporized <PICT:0606901/III/1> ammonia. Rotary scraper 11 sweeps the guanidine nitrate into trough 10 and then into steam-jacketed outlet pipe 18, from which it is discharged by screw conveyer 20. The ammonia evaporated in chamber 8 is taken off through pipe 22, condensed in condenser 25 and stored in tank 3. Specification 544,774, [Group IV], is referred to.ALSO:<PICT:0606901/IV(b)/1> Dry guanidine salts are obtained in finely divided form from solutions or suspensions in volatile solvents containing liquid ammonia, by heating the solution or suspension under pressure and then spraying it into a chamber, where the pressure is such that flash evaporation takes place. The temperature of the liquid when sprayed should be sufficiently high (120 DEG to 200 DEG C.) to permit substantially complete evaporation of ammonia. Crystallized dicyandiamide (10.8 parts) and ammonium nitrate (20.4 parts) are dissolved in liquid ammonia (19.2 parts) in tank 1, and the solution is then heated for 1 hour at about 160 DEG C. in autoclave 4 when guanidine nitrate (27.5 parts) is formed. The solution is run whilst still hot, through jacketed pressure reducing valve 23 to nozzle 7, where it is sprayed into chamber 8. The bulk of the ammonia immediately flashes into vapour and guanidine nitrate settles as a finely divided solid on the bottom 9 which is heated by steam jacket 16 to a temperature sufficiently high to assist the removal of unvaporized ammonia. Rotary scraper 11 sweeps the guanidine nitrate into trough 10 and then into steam-jacketed outlet pipe 18, from which it is discharged by screw conveyor 20. The ammonia evaporated in chamber 8 is taken off through pipe 22, condensed in condenser 25 and stored in tank 3. Specification 544,774 is referred to.
