Abstract

Calcium hypochlorite, before or after admixture with an alkali metal salt capable of reacting with it on contact with water to generate alkali metal hypochlorite, is coated with an organic film-forming water-repellent material in an amount sufficient to protect the mixture against atmospheric moisture, but insufficient to prevent the said reaction with water in bulk form. The alkali metal salt may be a silicate M2O.xSiO2, where x is one or more, or detergent substances, e.g. sodium carbonate, trisodium phosphate, or tetra sodium pyrophosphate or these substances may be added. Potassium chloride or lithium hydroxide may also be added. The film formers may be cellulose ethers or esters; polymers, e.g. polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl, polyvinylidene compounds or modified natural substances, e.g. rubber hydrochloride; monomers, e.g. styrene or methyl methacrylate which can be polymerized in situ; oily or waxy substances, e.g. oleic acid or esters, chlorinated naphthalenes, ceresine, paraffin oil, or stearic acid-alone or admixed. The film formers are preferably fusible or soluble in organic solvents. The substances may be milled with a viscous solution of film formers to produce granules or pellets. The compositions yield solutions having deodorising, disinfecting and sterilising properties suitable for treating metal objects, dental plates or as household detergents.
