Abstract

A swimming pool is disinfected by contacting the swimming pool water with a haloglycoluril compound having the formula <FORM:1039451/C1/1> in which R1 and R2 are alkyl groups, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are halogen atoms and x, m, n, p and q are each 0 or 1 at least two of m, n, p and q being 1. The compound may be used in powdered form in which case it may be confined in a container and contacted with sufficient quantities of the circulating pool water to dissolve enough compound to supply the required level of residual chlorine to the pool. Preferably the compounds are used in the form of novel preparations comprising the compounds in the form of dry, rod-like pieces which may be obtained by blending water with the dry compounds to form a damp, free-flowing powder, working up the powder mix under pressure to form a soft, coherent plastic mass and extruding the latter so as to form cylindrical rods, suitably of about 1 inch diameter, which are then dried. Other algicidal and fungicidal agents and buffering agents, e.g. sodium carbonate may also be added.ALSO:A haloglycoluril compound of the general formula <FORM:1039451/C2/1> wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl groups, R3, R4 R5 and R6 are halogen atoms preferably Cl, and x, m, n, p, and q are each 0 or 1, at least two of m, n, p and q being 1, is prepared in the form of dry, rod-like pieces suitable for use as a disinfectant preparation, especially for swimming pools. The compounds which may be obtained by chlorinating a glycoluril or an alkyl-substituted glycoluril in an aqueous medium in the presence of an inorganic acid-binding alkali metal compound as described in Specification 831,853, may be prepared in the form of dry rod-like pieces by intimately blending water and a dry compound of the above formula to form a damp free-flowing powder mix, working up the powder mix under pressure to form a soft, coherent plastic mass, extruding the plastic mass into coherent, cylindrical rods, e.g. of about 1 inch in diameter, and drying the rod-like products, e.g. at about 80 DEG C. Preferred compounds are 1,3,4,6-tetrachloroglycoluril, 1,5-dimethyl - 2,4,6,8 - tetraazabicyclo (3,3,1)nona-3,7-dione and dichloroglycoluril. The compounds may also be melted and cast in the form of solid or hollow cylinders of variable shape to provide different surface areas for disinfecting use with various water-circulation systems.ALSO:A disinfectant preparation comprises, in the form of dry, rod-like pieces a compound having the general formula:- <FORM:1039451/A5-A6/1> wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl groups, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are halogen atoms and x, m, n, p and q are each 0 or 1 at least two of m, n, p and q being 1. The preparation has bactericidal, algicidal and fungicidal properties and is particularly useful for disinfecting swimming pools in which case buffering agents, e.g. sodium carbonate may be added.
