[Class 100(iv)] In a laundry marking machine comprising a platen 61 for supporting the articles, means for moving the platen into printing contact with type-wheels 19 mounted sideby-side on an horizontal shaft 18 in a housing 10, setting-wheels 27 rotatable about an horizontal axis 26, and inter-connections between the setting-wheels and the corresponding type-wheels, comprising gears rotatable about an horizontal shaft, for causing angular movement of the setting wheels to produce an equal angular movement of the type wheels whereby selected types will be brought to printing position by rotation of the setting-wheels in either direction, the setting-wheels serve the dual purpose of selecting type to print and simultaneously visually indicating the type selected, and means engaging the interconnection gears is provided whereby the type-wheels and setting-wheels are aligned and locked in unison in a selected position, thereby ensuring that selected types are in register at the printing position. The connections consist of a gear wheel 22 fixed to each type-wheel, a wheel 29 having the same number of teeth fixed to each setting-wheel, and intermediate gears 24. The wheels 27 are adjusted by hand, and indicia corresponding to the characters in printing position are viewed through apertures in a sighting bar 30. The type and setting wheels are aligned and locked in adjusted position by a bar 46 engaging the teeth on the wheels 24, the bar 46 being carried by blocks 45 adjustably fixed by screws 41 to a frame 38 secured to a manually rotatable shaft 34. The bar 46 is held in the engaging or release position by spring toggle devices comprising bellcranks rocked by the frame 38, which have arms 51 forked to receive studs 54 on blocks slidable on pivoted rods against the action of springs 59. The type-wheels 19 may be lightened by slots 21. The platen 61 is operated pneumatically under the control of a valve 104, the mechanism being similar to that described in Specification 569,457. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes type-cleaning mechanism now forming the subjectmatter of Specification 606,333 and inking- mechanism comprising a roller which in the printing position of the platen rests on an ink-pad wrapped over a bar and dipping in a constant-level ink trough. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
