AUTOMATIC CLEANING DEVICE FOR NUMBERING- MACHINES.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 16, 1915. Serial No. 2,661.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES H. REINHARDT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of East Orange, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in an Automatic Cleaning Device for N umbering-Machines, of which the following is a specification. i

The object of my invention is to provide automatic means for cleaning numbering wheels, thus overcoming the tendency of the wheels to advance at the wrong time caused by the wheels sticking together by ink and dust that has accumulated 0n their sides while at rest, and, While it relates, primarily, to numbering machines known as type high machines, it is evident'that it could be used on other kinds without departing from the spirit of the invention. Also in counting machines and all machines of this class where some of the wheels remain stationary or at rest for a longer or shorter period.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, which are enlarged views of a type-high machine, forming part hereof,

wherem- Figure 1' is a cross section of a numbering machine-embodying my invention, Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 show two shapes of a cleansing disk either one of which could be used and, no doubt, other shapes also could be used. I, therefore, do not limit myself to any particular shape.

The letter A in the drawing indicates an end frame of a numbering machine, which carries the shaft, G, on which the wheels B,

the cleansing disk H, and the swinging pawl frame D, with its pawl E, are mounted.

The cleansing disk H, located between two numbering wheels, has a tab 71/ which projects beyond the periphery of the numbering Wheels into a hole in the yoke of swinging pawl frame D, so' that, as the pawl frame is made to swing back and forth to advance the numbers on the numbering wheel, the cleansing disk will also swing back and forth, thus rubbing the sides 'of adjacent numbering wheels so that the scraping edges h and oil holes 7L will keep thenumbering wheels cleaned and lubricated at all times.

The edges k on cleansing disk H are shaped to scrape against the sides of the numbering wheels on the backward movement of the swinging pawl frame D, because any tendencyto carry the numbering wheels backward is checked by hold-fast pawl F, under stress of spring I.

with a numbering head comprising a shaft w and numbering wheels mounted thereon, of disks mounted on said shaft and between said numbering wheels, said disks having scraping edges, and means for oscillating said disks on said shaft, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
