Abstract
606,225. Fluid-actuated valves. COSSOR, Ltd., A. C., and TIPPING, W. F. Jan. 10, 1946, No. 969. [Class 135] [Also in Group XIII] In a storage heater in which the hot water is pushed out of the heater chamber by the entry of cold water and overflows into an open outlet, the amount of water discharged being controlled by a valve 8 in the cold-water inlet, a cup 18, which is formed on the upper end of a hot-water outlet pipe 16 extending upwardly through the hot water storage chamber 1, has in the bottom an aperture 19 with a closure element 20 which is urged, e.g. by a spring 13, towards the closed position and is displaced from its seating in response to the pressure of the inflowing cold water. In the form shown, when the valve 8 is opened the entering cold water lifts the hollow piston 11 in the cylinder 7 against the action of the spring 13, and passes through holes 14 in the piston into a cap 9 which has slits 10 through which the cold water diffuses into the chamber 1. The piston 11 may be replaced by a diaphragm. An adjustable choke, e.g. a needle valve or a screwed plug, may be included in the cold-water inlet, or screw plugs may be provided to close one or more ports in the piston. According to the Provisional Specification, the opening 19 may be in the side of the cup 18.
