Abstract
A mixture of stereoisomers containing the dl-cis-isomer of a compound of the formula <FORM:0606198/IV(b)/1> wherein R and R1 are different acyl groups, one of which is benzoyl, and R11 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, is treated with an aqueous alkali, e.g. an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, at an elevated temperature under pressure to cause hydrolysis of the acyl groups, the mixture thus obtained neutralized with sulphuric acid and concentrated to separate the sparingly soluble benzoic acid dl-cis-2-(41-carboxy-butyl)-3 : 4-diamino-tetrahydrothiophene sulphate complex. In examples, dl-cis-2-(41-carboxy-butyl)-3 : 4-diamino-tetrahydrothiophene-sulphate-benzoic-acid complex is produced by treatment with aqueous barium or sodium hydroxide followed by acidification with sulphuric acid.
