Abstract

Hard metal carbides are recovered from a sintered mass of such material with a bond metal by heating the mass to a temperature greater than 1700 DEG C. in a non-oxidising and caused to swell and crack and become porous. The mass is then treated with an acid, preferably heated to its boiling point, to completely permeate the mass and dissolve out the bond metal. The resultant mass of hard-metal carbide may then be subjected to mechanical reduction.ALSO:Hard metal carbides and bond metals are recovered from a sintered mass of such materials by heating the mass to a temperature greater than 1700 DEG C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, and preferably in a reducing atmosphere, until the mass is caused to swell and crack and become porous. The mass is then treated with an acid, preferably heated to its boiling point, which acid permeates the porous mass, whereby the bond metal is dissolved. The resultant mass of hard metal carbide may then be subjected to mechanical reduction.
