Abstract
605,895. Knot-tying devices. FIELDING, J. T. Jan. 3, 1947, No. 32564/45.[Class 112] In a hand-carried device for tying a knot similar to a weaver's knot, of the kind comprising a rotating central tying and gripping bill and side guide plates, the guide-plates are slotted in such a manner that when the yarns are inserted one of them engages under the bill and the other is passed over the bill and across the first yarn. The frame of the_device, in the form shown, comprises a plate 2 fixed to a bracket 5 which is strapped to the fingers; this plate is formed with a hook 30. A stud 12 carries a rotatable disc 10 with lugs 13, 14 in which the spindle of the tying bill 26 rotates, under the action of an arcuate rack 17 on the plate 2 engaging notches in the spindle, when the disc is rotated on the stud 12 by means of a trigger 18 against the action of a return spring 23. The bill 26 comprises a pivoted member 28 between two fixed members, the pivoted member having a broad tail which engages an eccentric hole in a return extension 14a of the lug 14 to open and close the jaws of the 'bill by cam action. The mechanism is enclosed by a cup-shaped cover 3 slotted to fit on the lugs 13, 14, on which it is held by a spring wire 21, and carrying a guide-plate 48 for the yarns. A second guide-plate 44, on the other side of the disc 2, is carried by a sliding member 31 which is actuated, against a spring 36, by a tooth 32 on the disc 10 projecting through a slot in the disc 2 and is guided by this tooth and by a lug 34 on the disc 2 engaging a slot in the member 31. The yarns to be connected are first laid in notches 43, 47, respectively in the guide-plate 44 and are then passed together into a slot 49 in the guide-plate 48, this slot being so shaped that the yarn from the notch 47 engages under the tying bill (which is concealed by the tongue 42 of the guide-plate 44 in Fig. 1) while the other yarn is lifted past the end of the bill and brought down across the former yarn. On operation of the trigger 18, the member 31 and guide-plate 44 now rise to clamp the first-mentioned yarn against the hook 30, and the disc 10 and guide-plate 48 rotate, carrying the bill 26 with them and at the same time rotating it and actuating its movable member 28 so that the yarns are gripped, cut, and looped on the bill in the usual manner, the loop then being stripped off the bill (which has now made a complete revolution) to form the knot by the tension of the yarn held by the hook 30 and further rotation of the bill tightening the knot and causing the yarn ends to be pulled out of the jaws of the bill.
