Abstract

276,258. Cook & Co. Manchester, Ltd., and Collins, T. March 11, 1927. knot-tying devices.-A hand-operated appliance for joining the ends of textile yarns or threads, especially those of a spring nature, such as artificial silk, comprises a frame 10, Figs. 3 and 4, mounted on a handle of known kind and carrying on a rotatable spindle 11 a knotting bill 12, which is opened and closed in known manner by contact of a projection 12<a> on one member of the bill with the edge of an opening 12b in an arm 16 on the frame 10. The spindle 11 is rotated by a quadrant 14 operated by a finger piece 15 and engaging a. worm 13 on the spindle, or a nut on the spindle may be operated by a lever. A holding hook 18 formed at the outer end of a side plate 17 is attached to one side of the frame 10 so as to be reciprocated at the proper times by a lever, pivoted at 23, and engaging a slot 26 in the quadrant 14 at one end and a slot 21 in the rear end of the holding hook 18 at the other end. A tightening and drawing-off arm 27 is pivoted at 28 to the opposite side of the frame, being constrained by a spring 29 to occupy a normal position against the side of the frame. This arm 27 carries a pressure member 31 pivotally and slidably mounted thereon at 32 and adapted to co-operate with a projection 30 at the end of the arm 27 to grip the yarns. The nipping mechanism is normally held open by the spring 29, but the pressure member 31 is raised and pushed forward against the projection 30, when the finger piece 15 is depressed, by the engagement of a projection 35 on the quadrant 14. with a projection 33 at the rear end of the member 31. Threads or yarns 35, 36 to be knotted are laid together in the space between the jaws of the nipping mechanism and passed across the holding hook 18 from the underside. In operating the rotary bill 12 loops the threads around themselves and the threads are then moved into alignment by the moving back of the holding hook 18. Further rotation of the bill by the finger piece 15 completes the knotting loops, the threads are severed by the knotting bill, being meanwhile held by the nipping mechanism 31, 33, and the twined threads are pulled off the knotting bill, and the knot tightened and released from the hook 18 by the forward movement of the arm 27 against the spring 29 as the projection 34 engages the projection 33. The knot formed has the shape of a figure eight.
