Abstract

1,047,970. Laces. BURED Inc. March 17, 1964, No. 11286/64. Heading A3H. A lace making apparatus comprises means for feeding a plurality of continuous strands, means for applying tip material to each strand, means to direct the strands to a severing station, means for engaging and positioning the strands on an anvil block, means adjacent the block for locating the tip material on the block and a cutter blade movable towards the block for severing the strands. Braids 30, 30<SP>1</SP> are fed from reels 20, 20<SP>1</SP> over grooved rods 21, 211 and co-operating driven drums 23, 23<SP>1</SP> to tipping mechanism 40, 40<SP>1</SP> where tipping material is wrapped round the braids then are guided over selected pulleys of a series of pairs of pulleys 47, 47<SP>1</SP> &c. or over one pair of pulleys adjustably positioned according to lace length then passes between a pair of solenoid operated arms of an aligning device 33 with slotted guide 30 to a severing device and a transfer dial for the gripping jaws 69 of a packaging machine. The dial 50 supports a braid clamp at diametral notches. Each clamp comprises two jaws centrally connected by a finger; spring urged together at the lower end. One jaw is pivotally mounted adjacent a notch on the dial 50. One clamp is opened by a pair of shoes exerting pressure on the lower ends of the jaws, the shoes being actuated by two plungers pivotally connected by linkage to the plunger of a solenoid 70<SP>1</SP> acting through one dial notch. One jaw of the other clamp abuts the disc and is opened by one shoe actuated by solenoid 70. The clamps are controlled as the disc rotates through 180 degrees by an arcuate guide 215 over the dial and by a pivoting guide surface 216 conducting the laces to the gripping jaws. A pulley 102 on rotatable arm 103 bears down upon the laces to take up any slack as the dial rotates. A solenoid operated cutter projects through an aperture in the dial and severs the laces against an anvil block slidable in a guideway in a bracket adjustably positioned by a solenoid. The braids are guided to the cutter by a finger 98 extending parallel to block and by a stop adjacent the block on the bracket. After severing the laces lie across a pin 101 on the bracket over a flexible deflector and over a pulley on an arm 105. The arm moves downwardly and outwardly and the braids engage fingers 241 and 243 and cam 245 on finger 241, the arm moves the finger inwardly displacing the laces from the pulley 104 and out of the path of the subsequent braids. The clamp 52 returns to its initial position, the jaws are opened by actuating solenoid 70<SP>1</SP> to grip the braids and the cycle of operations repeats. The mechanism is operated automatically by motor 15.
