Abstract

605,761. Shovelling-machines. FRANCIS, J. L. Jan. 4, 1946, No. 346. [Class 68 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] A mechanical loader or excavator comprises a vehicle chassis 3 with a scoop or bucket 1 mounted on a transverse pivot 2 for movement between a forwardly facing position, in which it can be forced into a heap of material, and an upwardly facing position in which it can be discharged to one side of the chassis by mechanical means in its base. As shown, the bucket has a recessed base 6 in which works a scraper chain 4 for discharging the bucket through either of its open ends. The chain works round end rollers 5, either of which, according to which side of the chassis discharge is required, can be clutched to a respective driving pinion 43 brought into mesh with a pair of gears 42 driven by a motor 10 when the bucket is' brought into its upwardly facing position. Movement of the bucket is effected by chains 37 secured to capstan pulleys 34 at either side of the chassis, and driven by the motor 10 through gearing 32, 31 and a clutch controlled by a handle 52. The chassis is mounted on endless-tracks 29 driven by the motor 10 through a reversing gear and clutch 30.
