Abstract

632,520. Earth excavators. RUSTONBUCYRUS, Ltd. May 7, 1947, No. 12336. Convention date, June 7, 1946. [Class 68 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] In crane-type power excavators of the kind including a sluing boom and a shovel, dragline, clamshell or other excavating implement, and in which the various parts are driven through clutches from a constantly-running engine, the transmission mechanism includes a first shaft used only for a single operating motion, e.g propulsion, a second shaft, driven means carried by each shaft, clutch means associated with each driven means to connect it to its shaft, and means whereby the second shaft can be engaged selectively for said operating motion, e.g. propulsion, or for transmission of power for a second operating motion other than propulsion. A platform 13 carrying a constantly-running single-direction engine 14, transmission mechanism &c. and the dipper supporting beam 15, is mounted on a turntable 12 which is mounted on the frame 10 of an endless track vehicle. The engine take-off shaft 16 is connected by chain-and-sprocket gearing to a main transmission shaft 20 having bevel gears 45, 46 free on it, either of which can be clutched to it to drive bevel-gear 49 on shaft 50. This shaft is connected by gears 51, 52, shaft 53 and gear 54, to the turntable. A gear 21 fast on the shaft 20 engages a gear 22 which is engaged also by gears 23, 24 free on shafts 25, 26, respectively. The gears 23, 24 can be connected to their shafts by friction clutches 27, 28, and a gear 36 free on the shaft 26 can be secured to it by a dog-clutch 35. A similar clutch 38 connects a gear 39 to the shaft. The clutches 35, 38 are so connected that when one of them is "in," the other is " out," but they may have independent controls. The shaft 25 is connected by bevel-gears to the shaft 31, which is connected by bevelgears at its lower end to the traction shaft 34. The shaft 26 is connected by gear 36 to gear 37 fast on the shaft 25, so that when the clutches 28, 35 are engaged and the clutch 27 disengaged, the excavator is propelled in the reverse direction. If the clutch 28 is engaged and the clutch 35 disengaged, the clutch 38 will be engaged and the gear 39 will drive the crowd drum 43 through gear 40, shaft 41 and chain-andsprocket gearing. The gear 22 is fast on the shaft 55 to which the hoisting drum 56 can be connected by a clutch 57.
