Abstract
A solution of manganese sulphate and ammonium sulphate for use as electrolyte in the electrodeposition of manganese is treated at pH about 5.5-7.5 with aluminium sulphate in the proportion of not less than 0.4 lbs., calculated as anhydrous aluminium sulphate to each 100,000 lbs. of the solution in order to precipitate silica, which is then removed from the solution. A preferable range of proportions is 10-160 parts by weight of anhydrous aluminium sulphate to 100,000 parts by weight of solution. The aluminium sulphate may be added to pH 5.5-6.5, the pH then being raised to 7.2-7.5; or part of the aluminium sulphate may be added at pH 5.5-6.5, the remainder being added at pH 6.5-7.5. In an example anolyte containing 10-18 gms. per litre of manganese as sulphate and 120-180 gms. per litre of ammonium sulphate, pH 1-2, withdrawn from a diaphragm cell and digested with manganese ore to a manganese concentration of 20-50 gms. per litre. The pH is adjusted to 5.5-6.5 and iron, arsenic and antimony precipitated by air or other oxidizing agent. Aluminium sulphate is then added, the precipitate formed being allowed to remain in suspension. The pH is then raised to 7.2-7.5 and further aluminium sulphate added. Ammonium sulphate is then added, precipitating cobalt, nickel, &c., together with aluminium hydroxide. The purified liquid which should contain not more than 0.001 gms. per litre silica is returned for use as catholyte.
