Abstract
605,409. Railway track brakes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and MARSHALL, C. H. Dec. 21, 1945, No. 34763. [Class 103 (i)] A track brake for railway wagons comprises an elongated slipper mounted parallel or substantially so to the track and capable of being raised from an inoperative position to a position such that it will engage the bottoms of the horn stays at one side of a wagon passing over it. A second slipper may be disposed parallel to the first to operate on the horn stays on the other side of the wagon. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, as fitted to a wagon tippler, the slipper 10 is of channel section stiffened by a rolled steel joist 11 and is mounted for vertical movement on two sets of four parallel links 12 pivoted to the lifting arms 14 of the tippler and to brackets 13 on the joist. The slipper is supported by rollers 15H, 15A on levers 15 secured to a shaft 16 carried by bearings fixed to the foundations of the tippler, an arm 26 on the shaft being connected by an adjustable tension link 25, a lever 23 and a compression link 22 to an arm 21 on the shaft 19 of a hand lever 18. The arm 21 and link 22 form a toggle linkage, the mechanical advantage of which increases as the lever 18 is depressed to raise the slipper into engagement with the hornstays 28. A stop 29 receives the braking reaction from the slipper. In a second form, Fig. 4, the slipper 10, 11 is inclined downwardly towards the direction of approach of the wagon and is carried by two pairs of parallel levers 32 pivoted in fixed brackets 30. One pair of levers is rigidly connected to a hand lever 18 or pedal 18A, and a stop 31 limits downward movement of the slipper. The levers 32 are inclined towards the direction of approach of the wagon so that the force applied by the hornstays tends to raise the slipper and so increase the retarding effect. The slipper may be operated by screws or hydraulic means.
