[Class 100(ii)] Inking - apparatus.-A detachable' auxiliary ink fountain for rotary printing-machines comprises an ink trough 30 having end walls 35, a fountain roller 38 rotatably journalled in the walls, a doctor blade 62, and a second roller 47 independently rotatable in relation to the roller 38 and also journalled in the walls 35 and extending radially beyond the end walls so as to be rotated by contact with a roller 16 being one of the main ink train rollers and to transfer ink from the roller 38 to the roller 16. A number of units of page width for different colours may be provided, each being clamped on top of the normal ink trough by clamps 33 engaging bevelled feet 31 on the trough 30. The side walls 35 are of a thickness not more than half the width required for the margins between pages whereby the vibration of the ink rollers is not interfered with and fountains may be situated adjacent each other. Each roller 38 comprises a tube 40, Fig. 4, with end filling-pieces 39 bearing against the walls 35, rubber &c. packing 45 being fitted in grooves 44 in the members 39 to keep ink from bearings 42. The end roller 38 is driven from a sprocket 80 by a polygonal bar 81 entering a socket 41 fixed to a filling-piece 39, and the remaining rollers 38 are connected up by bars 81 of appropriate lengths: the sprocket 80 is driven by a chain from the normal fountain roller. The doctor 62 is clamped against a support 64 by screws 65 and is adjusted by turning thumb screws 70 carrying worms 69 engaging worm wheels 68 on screws 67 bearing on the blade. The support 64 is pivoted at 66 for lifting clear and is held in the operative position by screws 75 engaging notches 78 in the fountain. The roller 47 has helical ribs 52 and is spaced slightly from the roller 38. Mist guards 84, 86 extending above and below each unit prevent ink from escaping into the press room.
