[Class 5(i)] [Also in Group II] In a garbage grinder for attachment to a sink 36 comprising a frusto-conical casing 24 with a removable ring 27 furnished with cutting teeth 12 and spaces 14 for the escape of reduced garbage into an annular trough 16 and waste pipe 84, comminution is effected by the hammers 18 so pivoted at 74 to a motor-driven hub 72 that they may yield in a direction opposite to that in which they are driven in the event they meet an obstruction (e.g. bones), and extend close to the cutting teeth without engaging the same when in their extended (i.e. rotating) position. The hammers may be fitted with upwardly projecting impactors 80, and certain of the teeth 12 may be offset inwardly as at 60, Fig. 2. A controllable closure 90 allows entry of waste material into the chamber 24, the arrangement of an arm 118, notched cam 110 and spring 104, Fig. 7, operated manually or by foot lever 122, enabling said closure to be retained in closed or either fully or partly open position.
