[Class 52(v)] [Also in Groups VII and XXV] Flexible rod material for clothes lines, suspending curtains and the like. comprises a length of flexible plastic sleeving containing an inherently resilient core serving to maintain the sleeving distended. The sleeving may be formed from an elastomeric compound comprising a vinyl chloride acetate resin compounded with a plasticiser. A metallic core composed of one or more strands of tempered steel wire, or one or more lengths of helically coiled wire, is used. Preferably the core c is fed, with a uniform clearance all round it, through a die, the plastic being flowed under pressure into the clearance to form the sleeve a. which adheres to the core c and penetrates into the helical spaces b between adjacent turns of the coil, so that the inner surface of the sleeve a is helically formed, and expands and contracts with the coil while the outer surface remains smooth. In this way when the core is extended it remains fully covered by the sleeve, thus dispensing with independent means for holding the two parts together. The ends may be joined by binding, or by interengaging releasable fasteners, e.g. by male and female coupling sleeves each providing a cuff which covers the end of the sleeve a.
