Abstract
603,797. Yarns. CLARK, D. M. (Abbott Machine Co.). Oct. 30, 1945, No. 28717. [Class 120(iii)] [Also in Group XVII] Yarns are formed into a package for transport or subsequent processing by running them on to the surface of a growing mass of yarn on which a gaseous pressure is maintained. The yarn Y, taken from a cake or similar package, is delivered by rollers 11 to a container 13 having a perforated base through which air is drawn by a fan 17 in a stationary housing 15 on which the container 13 is placed. It is stated that the suction developed causes a compact package of even density and thickness to be formed. When the container is full and while suction is still applied a lid may be fitted which has a central hole for use if the yarn is to be drawn off for mechanical processing, such as warping or knitting or if the package is to be carried by a loom shuttle. If the yarn is to be liquid-processed, such as by dyeing or sizing, a perforated lid may be fitted and the entire container applied to a dyeing or like machine wherein liquid may be passed through the package. The twist, of the yarn_ may be set by such liquid treatment and the yarn may also be dried in the container, which may be made of metal or of paper, cardboard or other fibrous material treated, if desired, to render it resistant to yarn processing liquids.
