[Class 59] In a grinding-mill as described in Specification 382,705 in which the minimum distance between two grinding surfaces is determined by an adjustable abutment, the grinding pressure being maintained by spring means, the shaft 7 carrying the rotary grinding-member 3 is withdrawably splined into a worm or like gear wheel 8 mounted in a gear box 6 on the base frame 4. The housing 1 for the grinding members 3, 18 is supported from the base 4 by uprights 5, and has a depending sleeve portion 17 which slidably engages a sleeve 13 containing a spring 12, which applies the grinding pressure, a ballbearing 16 engaging a shoulder on the shaft 7 and a collar 14 pinned at 15 to the shaft 7 between which collar and a thrust ball-bearing, the spring 12 is confined. The force of the spring is adjusted by rotating, by means of a tommy-bar, a screwed member 10 which is threaded in a bush 11 in the lug 9 of the gear box 6. The sleeve 17 encloses, in vertically slidable relation, a ball bearing and dust-excluding sleeves and washers. The minimum distance between the members 3, 18 is determined by a bifurcated lever 19 which bears on projections 20 on the sleeve 13 and is adjusted by a handwheel 24 and a screw 22. The uprights 5 carry also a mixer above, and in vertical alignment with, the hopper 25 of the grinder, the bottom end 29 of the mixer shaft being squared to engage a socket 30 on the grinder shaft. The mixer can thus be lifted vertically away from the grinder to permit the hopper 25, which is mounted on a member 26 hinged to the housing 1, to be swung aside. The grinder 3 and its shaft may, after removal of the pin 15, then be removed by lifting vertically. A cooling liquid or steam may be circulated in channels 27. A scraper 32, shown as being horizontal but being vertical in practice, is held in a slot in a member 31 which is urged by a spring 35 towards the rotary member 3.
