Abstract
603,655. Moulding concrete buildings in situ; inflatable cores. NEFF, W. Oct. 26, 1945, No. 28363. [Class 20(ii)] Relates to the construction of concrete buildings, and provides improvements on the method disclosed in Specification 554,954. A pneumatic former 10 is of open bottom construction and is secured along its bottom edge to the foundation by steel tapes 21, 22 Fig. 3, so that the foundation closes the open bottom. The lower tape 21, disposed below the overhanging surface 19, anchors the former against upward forces, and the upper tape 22, secured against the shoulder 19, anchors it against sideward spreading forces. The former is inflated through the nipple 14, Fig. 1. or through an air pipe in the foundation, and a thin layer of plastic material characterised by its fast setting qualities and lightness in weight is applied to its outer surface. The weight of the plastic material, which is applied from the top downwards, results in a controlled deformation of the former, Figs. 2 and 3. A removable guard strip 23, of veneer, is wrapped on the outside of the tapes 21', 22, to shield the lower edge of the former from the plastic material. The thin layer of plastic material, when set, provides a load-sustaining preliminary structure 25 on which a layer of insulation 26 and a layer or layers of cement 27 may be applied, thus to produce the final building. The former may be stripped from the inside of the final building or may be left in place for its insulation value. The infiation pressure does not exceed 1 1b. per sq. in., and the former may thus be made from a light-weight fabric such as nylon, yarn, cotton muslin or specially treated paper. In constructing the former the sections 11 are cut from the material and secured together at their edges, the bottom edge being preferably reinforced by a suitable strip 12 and an airproofing coating being applied. Door and window openings may be provided for by frames placed against the former, which are set in position by the initial layer of plastic material. The former can be fabricated to provide structure of other shape than hemispherical.
