Abstract
603,648. Hydraulically operated friction clutches. SOC. DES BREVETS KEGRESSE, (S.E.K.). Oct. 5, 1945, No. 26021. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] In a hydraulically-operated plate clutch applicable to the control of change-speed gears and having a presser plate 3 acted upon by an annular hydraulic piston 4 for clutch engagement, resilient members 11 comprising coil or leaf springs or blocks of resilient material are mounted between the plate and piston to delay clutch disengagement due to leakage when the fluid supply has been cut off. As shown, applied to a clutch of the single intermediate disc type, the resilient members are uniformly distributed around the clutch axis and comprise individual units made up of springs 11 located in cups 7, 9 seating in recesses in the opposed faces of the piston 4 and presser plate 3 respectively. The cups 7 carry bolts 8 on which the cups 9 are slidable to compress the springs 11, whose total resilience is such that when the fluid pressure is operative for clutch engagement they are completely compressed, the piston 4 abutting the presser plate 3 directly. On cutting off the supply of operating fluid, the springs 11 extend as the piston 4 retracts due to leakage and are just of sufficient strength to maintain full clutch engagement up to the limit of their travel when the cups 9 abut heads 10 on the bolts 8.
